Arthur Charles Crossman was born 1 Sep 1900 at Tiverton, Devon, son of Charles and Emma Crossman from Devon. During WW1 he was in the Navy as an Ordinary Telegraphist Service No. J51757 Records show him attached HMS DEFIANCE which was the last wooden line-of-battle ship, but by WW1 was the
Devonport torpedo and mining schoolship.
Arthur married Mary A Schnacke in West Ham in 1936. Commonwealth War Graves Commission record Mary Ann Crossman as living West Mersea. In the 1945 and 1951 Electoral Rolls, she is living at Sea Cot, Prince Albert Road, West Mersea (now No.6 Goings Lane).
Arthur died at sea 22 May 1941 when HMS GLOUCESTER was sunk by German dive bombers on 22 May 1941 during the Battle of Crete, with the loss of 722 men out of a crew of 807.
