TitlePhillips / Bolton Family Tree
AbstractThis Phillips family was originally from Hertfordshire but by the late 19th Century were mostly settled in the Mill Hill area of London.
The 1939 Electoral Roll shows that both Sidney Harold Phillips and his sister-in-law Ethel Maud Phillips had holiday cottages in East Mersea - the White Cottage, Shop Land and "The Beach". After WW2, this connection with Mersea resulted in both families settling in West Mersea - at Chisamba in Lower Kingsland Road and The Roseries in Yorick Road. Beryl Phillips married George Milgate in 1960 - they had no children and when Beryl died, there were no longer any members of the family living in Mersea.

When Peter Phillips house in Lower Kingsland Road was cleared, a journal was found in the loft. It was written by George Peter Phillips and records a journey to America on CITY OF PARIS in 1873. See Journal of Mr Phillips

Ethel Maud Bolton married Vivian Ulysses Phillips, and this links us to the Bolton family, who came mainly from the Lambeth and Camberwell area of South London. Peter Bolton born c1851 settled in Mill Hill, Middlesex, and kept Bolton's Stores there. Several of the family worked in the shop and Post Office Business. Others spread round the world. Rose and Alice married brothers Charles and Frederick North and settled in Canada. Louisa married Howard Suckling and settled in South Africa - they thought Canada too cold. Others eventually moved to the Southend on Sea area. But the Mersea link - Maud Phillips and her brother Sydney came to Mersea, as described above.

<p>Tilly says of Johnny Milgate:
Grandad, was a huge part of my life. I never had sitters if mum and dad were going out I always went and stayed the night with Grannie & Grandad and never wanted to go home again.

He was a wonderful man and his garden produce was legendary in Mersea. As the eldest grandchild (there is only myself and my brother) and a true Mersea girl having been born on the Island, the telegram he got from the Queen on his 100th birthday was passed to me and is one of my treasured possessions.
