Photograph posted by Stuart Pugh, Branch Manager Barclays Bank West Mersea, on Facebook June 2021. Stuart says "Barclays West Mersea was opened at some point before 1894 by Gurneys, Round, Green and Co (also known as the Colchester Bank). We know it was open before 1894 because it is listed in an 1894 Banker's Almanac, but we can find nothing in our records to indicate exactly when it was opened. At that point, it was just an agency of the main branch in Colchester.

"In 1896, Gurneys, Round, Green and Co was one of the 20 banks which amalgamated to form Barclay and Company Limited. At that time, lists of all the branches in operation were compiled and West Mersea is listed. Information was also compiled on branch premises, but West Mersea's entry simply states that it was based in hired premises and the fixtures and fittings were valued at £17.

"This photo shows the branch in what are described as temporary premises around 1910. It was known then as Mersea Island Branch.

The location is on the north side of Church Road. The house behind was Cook's Garden Centre until 2020. The Bank moved into this house within a few years and it became known as Bank House - see SS020006

The corrugated iron building later became the garage for the house - CW2_P21_005 .
