The changing scene at Peldon

The Peldon Rose is very much a rallying point for thirsty travellers in 1969. In its bar they can see this old picture, taken when local people made the trip to the crossroads by the Rose not only for liquid sustenance, but for the makings of the staff of life also.

There are probably not many people still in the village who remember the old mill which stood on the crossroads, dominating the scenery. But Mr Ivan Pullen, whose family ran the Rose for many years - he now lives at Rose Farm, opposite - can remember it as a toddler, being sent to 'help' the old miller as he ground the corn that was brought to him.

Housewives, he says used to go out gleaning after the reapers and bring the corn to the mill.

But times change. The mill was pulled down about 1904. On the site now is the bungalow of the builder Mr Stanley May. It is built on the foundations of the old mill, and though the scene is very different, the hedges and trees remain.
