TitleOwen Parry barge notebook
AbstractBarge trip accounts 22 June 1910 to 28 November 1916. Name in front of book is Captain T. Francis, Barge "VERA", 27 Hythe Station Road, Colchester. Inside it says "M. Clarke left VERA to take charge of BURNHAM 13 November 1913 in VERA 7 years and 5 months. Most pages signed "Paid Cash W.S. Jarvis" From 30 September 1916 they are signed W.S. Jarvis for Owen Parry Ltd.
VERA was built 1898 by Shrubshall at Limehouse, Official No. 108369. She was bought by William Stokes Jarvis about 18 months later.
She was lost off Maplin Spit on 7th November 1952 loaded with sand.
Ron Green writes: Tom Francis who had the old Colchester barge COLNE VALLEY, became her [VERA] skipper for many years. Bill Jarvis also bought THE BROWNIE when four years old. She had laid unsold at Gravesend for months and was towed to Brightlingsea with a broken topmast and leaking badly. Jarvis paid £450 for her and gave her to Tom Francis to try her paces etc.. See an article about Colchester barges by Rod Minter in Topsail Magazine No. 15 of Autumn 1976 for more information.
