TitleJabez and Emma Wenlock
AbstractMR AND MRS JABEZ WENLOCK

These two obituaries of Jabez and Emma Wenlock appeared in the Essex County Standard neighbourhood news, and were, most likely, written by Mrs Dansie of Peldon Village Stores who contributed weekly columns, mainly for Peldon, every week between 1931 and 1948.

DEATH OF THE OLDEST INHABITANT - Mr Jabez Wenlock (known to his friends as Jeff) will be greatly missed in the parish where he had lived for over 60 years, and where he and his wife celebrated their diamond wedding four years ago. Mr Wenlock was employed at Copt Hall Farm for the greater part of his life and was a general favourite being of a merry disposition. His health had been failing for some time, and he passed away at the age of 87. He leaves a widow, five sons, and three daughters. The funeral was at the parish church, The Revds L Watson-Bullock and CT Kenderdine officiating. Miss McDougall was at the organ. The hymn'Rock of Ages' was sung and as the cortege left the church the hymn 'Abide with Me' was played. Essex County Standard 13.1.1933

DEATH OF MRS WENLOCK - After a long illness Mrs Emma Wenlock passed away at Great Wigborough on Friday July 30th at the advanced age of 88 years. Mrs Wenlock whose maiden name was Martin, was married in 1869 to Mr Jabez Wenlock, a merry-hearted farm worker, known to his friends as 'Jeff', who was employed for the greater part of his life at Copt Hall Farm, and who died in 1933, four years after the highly respected and popular couple had celebrated their diamond wedding. The deceased lived a very active life, bringing up a large family at Lower Barn Cottage, which was situated 'miles from anywhere', and being in possession of very good health made light of a long walk on shopping days to the neighbouring village of Peldon , and even in old age, until infirmity prevented, she climbed the very steep hill which leads to the Parish Church [most likely St Stephens], where she and her husband were familiar figures at evening service. The funeral took place at the church on Tuesday, the rector, Rev F Yates, officiating, with Mrs Yates presiding at the organ. Two hymns 'Rock of Ages' and 'Praise the Lord' were sung.
