TitleMemory Lane - World War One Volunteers
AbstractFollowing all the interest shown in the Tommies on the Strood depicting the local men who gave their lives in the First World War, I have in my collection, a very battered postcard showing the Volunteers of the First World War - the equivalent of the Home Guard of the Second World War.

The photo was taken by the Armoury, the little square brick building with a hip roof that stood by the footpath leading from the junction of Church Road and Churchfields through to St Peters Road, where the Coastguards kept their rifles. The Coastguard Cottages can be seen in the background. The two men sitting to right of the picture have been recognised as butcher Arthur Cock (Smoking a pipe) and builder Clifford White holding a rifle. The man standing to the right has an RP (Regimental Police) armband on his sleve and could possibily be a regular soldier.
