TitleReverend Baring Gould and Reverend Dunn
AbstractThe Reverend Baring Gould, author of many Victorian novels, gave us this information. That this much loved church service Harvest Festival was first introduced by Rev. Robert Stephen Hawker September 1843. The Harvest Festival is the countrywide celebration and thanksgiving in the autumn.

The Rev. Dunn ws the vicar of East Mersea in 1920. He had surprised his parishioners by being the father of twins when he was well over 60 years. He used to come to the Victory driving a tub cart and pony, usually in the afternoon, and knock on the back door and ask for a gingerbeer with two glasses. The price was then 4d. One afternoon I was a bit peeved at this intrusion into closing hours, and when he tendered 6d I said that's just the amount. He replied 'May the good Lord forgive you for I wont!' and he never came again.
