"President of Tollesbury Sailing Club, Mr Douglas Gurton has died aged 72.
Mr Gurton, of North Road, spent a lifetime on the water and was in the process of completing a book on the history of the village when he died.
Born in Tollesbury, he went to Liverpool at the age of 16 to become an apprentice with Chambers Shipping Company. Before completing his indentures he had sailed round the world seven times.
He then served in one of the largest yachts to be berthed at Tollesbury. From there he joined the Thames River Police at Rochester, where he became an inspector.
He was commissioned in the Royal Navy Reserves and served as a lieutenant commander on various warships. During the latter stages of the last world war Mr Gurton volunteered for the Civil Affairs Organisation, serving in France, Belgium and Holland. He then completed his service as a captain in Germany.
After the war he returned to police duties. When he retired he worked for the Cunard Company as a security officer.
He returned to Tollesbury and became shipkeeper on the MV ARO, the largest ship to lay-up in the Blackwater.
Mr Gurton was still active after retiring from full time work. He was very interested in the history of Tollesbury and its maritime traditions. He also contributed many articles to newspapers and magazines and gave many talks to various organisations.
He took a keen interest in Tollesbury's St Mary's Church. He was a sidesman, a former churchwarden, a mason and member of the Royal British Legion.
The funeral service was held at St Mary's Church on Monday afternoon.
