"The Blackwater Culch War. One of the more colourful Essex maritime legends is of the violent confrontation between oyster dredgermen from Tollesbury and others from Burnham in which several Burnham smacks were boarded, their cargo of dredgings taken from public oyster grounds in the Blackwater thrown overboard, and their crews threatened. The truth has been embellished at times into a full scale conflict. It is interesting to try and discover the facts. On Thursday 9 March 1894 ... (ends). |
