Translation to Modern English
In the name of God, Amen. This year of our lord, 1516.
I, William Sayer, of West Mersea, with a full mind and remembrance make my testament and last will as follows.
First, I bequeath my soul to almighty God and my body to be buried in the churchyard of St Peter & St Paul in West Mersea.
I bequeath to the high altar, for tithes forgotten, 8d, and to Paul's Pardon, 2d.
I bequeath to my wife a house and the land belonging to it, to give and to sell, and all my goods movable and unmovable, to pay my debts, and to bring my body honestly in the earth (or... and to permit a proper burial). I make my wife my executrix and Walter Geffrey to help her.
Witnessed by Richard Kynot and Stephen Benet and others.
