30   Thomas Freere my Landlord my Clock to be delivered unto him at the end of my Lease afores[ai]d

Translation to Modern English

In the name of God, Amen. 23rd March 1660.

I, Sarah Hackney, of West Mersea, Essex, widow, being very sick in body but of sound mind (thanks be to God), do ordain and make this my last will and testament as following:

I give my soul to God who made it and my body to the earth from whence it came for burial. I disperse the goods that it has pleased God to bestow upon me as follows:

First, I give and bequeath to my servant, John Foakes, the sum of one hundred and five pounds of which five pounds shall be paid to him within three months of my death and the remaining one hundred pounds to be paid to him at the end of the term of my lease of Peet Hall which expires at Michaelmas 1664.

I give and bequeath to my brother Daniel Horspitt of Great Horkesley the sum of fifteen pounds to be paid to him within three months after my death.

I give and bequeath to my relation Sarah Horspitt of Boxted the sum of ten pounds to be paid to her at the end of my aforesaid lease.

I give and bequeath to my relation Thomas Webb of Pebmarsh the sum of ten pounds to be paid to him at the end of my aforesaid lease.

I give and bequeath to my relation John Finch of Wethersfield the sum of ten pounds to be paid to him at the end of my aforesaid lease.

I give and bequeath to Judah Lay of Great Birch the sum of twenty shillings to be paid to her on the day following my death.

I give and bequeath to my servant Ann Margerrum the sum of twenty shillings to be paid to her within one month of my death.

I give and bequeath to my servant John Wending the sum of twenry shillings to be paid to him within one month of my death.

I give and bequeath to my servant Aaron Arwicker the sum of ten shillings to be paid to him within one month after my death.

I give a further bequest to my servant John Foakes of one feather bed and bedstead with the curtains and hangings; two feather bolsters; one pillow; two blankets; a covering; and a large chest which currently stands in the parlour. These items are to be delivered to him at the end of my aforesaid lease.

I give and bequeath further to my relation, Sarah Horspitt, one wheeled bed; one feather bed; two feather bolsters; one pillow; two blankets; one covering; and six pewter dishes for everday use. These items to be delivered to her at the end of my aforesaid lease.

I give and bequeath to my landlord, Mr Thomas Frere, my clock which is to be delivered to him at the end of my aforesaid lease.

I give and bequeath the whole of my remaining goods and chattels to Robert Thedam of West Mersea whom I hereby appoint sole executor to this my last will and testament. The executor will prove this will, arrange payment of these legacies, arrange my funeral and pay my debts and funeral expenses.

In witness whereof I have today signed and sealed this document on the date written above.
