Abstract | Memories from Brian Chaplin, who lived in Layer de la Haye and attended Birch School 1953-1957.
Some names from my autograph book.
Class of 57: Anthony Francis, Graham Francis, Elizabeth Mary Bacon, Martin Parmenter, Bruce Turner, Barbara Johnson, Sylvia Coe, Peter Beard, Veronica Bartlett, Victor Little, Gordon Meekings, Clive Featherstone, Ann Baines, Henry Pooley, Wendy Smith, Roger Olley, Jenifer Shelton, Tony? Partner, Marilyn King, Margaret Alston, Roger Allcock, Anita Lynch, Gordon Page, David De'ath, Andrew Ward, June Norfolk and John Meeton.
I did not manage to collect them all but 29 is not bad.
I was trying to think why some of the classmates are not in the list above, but it is probably because we left
the final year in two release dates one in March and another in September. My birthday is in
late March and I missed the "cut". Some pupils were six months older than me and would have left the previous March.
Some of the names that are missing are Jimmy Roots, Elizabeth Whybrow, Helen Whybrow, Janet Wenlock (deceased), Angela Howard. Another boy in my class was Lennie Cranmer from Layer Marney who married a girl
called Nelly Bickers? - I believe she was also from Layer Marney.
Patrick Hines from Wigborough, and
Margeret Hawes also from Wigborough.
My teachers were "Get in there" Morton - the nickname came from a popular radio show. "Harris" Tweed, he lived in Layer and had a son named Nigel who attended Birch school, I think he was a widower.
"Bunny" Clark so nicknamed because his wife produced a newborn every twelve months or so,
and Good old Donald A Scott nicknamed "Ducks ***** Scott because of his initials. He had a Morgan three wheeler with the radiator behind the "V" configured two cylinders
and used to roar into school with his college scarf fluttering in the wind.
