Commodore Huberht Hudson, RNR.
Huberht Hudson took part in the 1914 Shackleton Antarctic Expedition, and on return served in 'Q' ships, decoys against enemey submarines and commerce raiders. He studied for his Master's ticket and served with British India. Huberht came to live in Mersea when he married in 1925 and his wife, Dr Jean Hudson, became a Doctor on the island.
During WW2, Commander Hudson was a Commodore of Convoys and was lost at sea in 1942 when his ship was torpedoed on a convoy from Gibraltar to the UK. He is commemorated on the Liverpool Naval Memorial, Hubhert Taylor Hudson, Captain, Royal Naval Reserve, Date of Death 15 June 1942, age 55.

At 0058 and 0059 [15 June 1942], U-552 attacked the convoy HG-84 about 400 miles WNW of Corunna and sank three ships, ETRIB, PELAYO and SLEMDAL. The PELAYO was the ship of the convoy commodore H.T. Hudson RNR RD. The commodore, eleven crew members, three gunners and two naval staff members were lost. The master, 24 crew members, two gunners and three naval staff members were picked up by the British rescue ship COPELAND and landed at Gourock on 20 June.
