Houseboat Fire. The houseboat ERYCINA at present occupied by Mrs Garrioch and her sister Mrs Goddard, was extensively damaged by fire on Monday afternoon. The houseboat was unoccupied at the time, although a short time previously the two young women, two young children and a maid had been on board. West Mersea Fire Brigade made a rapid and smart turn-out, and although the fire had already got a very strong hold in the saloon they succeeded in salvaging considerable furniture, toys etc. Major J.E. Harden, Chief Fire Officer, was attending a Council meeting at the time, but quickly joined his men, who, under Third Officer G. Mussett, were already doing everything possible to prevent the fire spreading; nevertheless the saloon, forecastle and upper deck suffered considerably. Mrs Garrioch and her small son, and Mrs Goddard and her baby daughter received accommodation at the Sailing and Social Club where their parents live.
