It became known as the Dead Man's Penny. It is much larger than the old penny that was in circulation - it is 4.75 inches (12cm) diameter. This medal can be identified as being made at Woolwich Arsenal.

Charles was in the Coldstream Guards and was killed 27 August 1918 age 34.
He was brought up in Great Wigborough, but by 1910 he was married and living at Perry Barr, Birmingham.

Plaque donated to Mersea Museum February 2022 by Charnwood Museum in Loughborough. It was their Accession No. 2002.27.
