Henry III Silver Penny found in field at Wellhouse, West Mersea .
The field is being put down to grass, and the owner invited the Museum to go over the field. The work was done on 15 Feb 2017 by David Conway and members of Colchester Metal Detecting Club, and the Silver Penny is just one of the finds, even though the field had been searched before. The field is 202 on the Tithe Map and 269 on the 1897 OS map. Date: 15 March 2017 Photo: Mersea Museum Image ID MMB_011 Category 1 Museum-->Artefacts and Contents | |

On the left, the face is a crowned king, and the letters RIC are part of Henricus. The short cross on the obverse is surrounded by the Latin name and place of the moneyer/mint which is worn and hard to decipher. [Sue Howlett]
