The name Pyefleet House was given to the house by the Tates in the 1970s. Before that it had been 'Strood Close' and then 'The Vicarage, Peldon.' In "The Great English Earthquake" by Peter Haining, it is named as Strood Villa. He quotes "Built in 1860 of substantial stone and brickwork";
A report on the earthquake says the house is the residence of Mr Hugh Green, the highly esteemed and wealthy surgeon of the district. It goes on "Mr Green's house is literally split from end to end - there is not a sound wall either inside or outside standing. All the windows in the house are smashed, the cap stone to the porch at the entrance is down, as also are the chimneys... [ but in this photograph the windows look largely intact... ].
