Douglas Went ran a photographic business in Brightlingsea. All the early negatives were lost in a fire c1935. He suffered a heart attack in 1944 and from then on was not so active. He was born 1887 and died 1970.

His photographs were widely published - in magazines such as Yachting World, Yachtsman, Country Life, The Field, Essex Countryside, and in books by authors such as Hervey Benham, John Leather, J Wentworth Day.

Mersea Museum has over 700 of his photographs, and there is also a significant collection in Brightlingsea Museum.
