Beach Huts. The "old sore" of people sleeping in beach huts on Mersea Island was reopened by Cllr. C.S. Smith at a WMUDC meeting on Monday. He appealed to the council to use common sense and "let sleeping dogs lie". but if sleeping in a beach hut should cause trouble, he would be the first to urge that something should be done, he continued. "Some people have been coming here for as long as I can remember," he said. "Let's have some peace and quiet." In reply, Mrs M.A.M. Ellis expressed her concern about beach huts being blatantly advertised for sleeping. Mrs E.I. Cox was concerned about the number of people who slept close together with a stove nearby. After some discussion on the subject, it was decided to delete the item in the minutes which recommended that licenses should be terminated in respect of huts advertised for sleeping.
