The story of the S.S. LOWLANDS which was torpedoed near the Girdler Sandbank 18 March 1916. She was beached on Mucking Flats 19 March 1916. Some time later she was patched up and towed to the River Colne, but the pumps gave trouble and she had to be beached at East Mersea, just north of the Stone.
