A Short History of Essex

A 10 week course on successive Mondays from 7th October 2024
at Mersea Museum 7pm to 9.30pm

This course will chart the history of Essex taking in the Iron Age the Rule of the Romans - its role as a Sovereign Kingdom and later a constituent part of England.

Each class will last for 2.5 hours. Each week will comprise of a 1 hour tutor led session, 30 minutes break and examination of artefacts and then another hour session.
Audience members are encouraged to bring along things they think may assist.
A warm informal atmosphere will be maintained every week.
A written hand out of lecture notes will accompany each session.

Essex is today a relatively heavily populated county in the South east of England with a long coastline and a varied geography. Today its citizens are a diverse group but often the subject of unfortunate stereotypes. It has however a rich and diverse history which deserves further study. This course will chart the history of Essex taking in the Iron Age, the Rule of the Romans—its role as a Sovereign Kingdom and later as a constituent part of England.
Its role in the developing history of Britain will be surveyed in a series of ten sessions.

A History of the Blackwater Estuary

A 10 week course on successive Mondays from 7th October 2024
at Mersea Museum 10am to 12.30pm

This is a re-run of the course on Monday evenings Autumn 2023, for the benefit of those that could not come last year.

The course offers an historical survey of the communities surrounding the river estuary. It will focus on the communities around the river and especially the islands (both extant and those that have ceased to be islands) that are a feature of the River Blackwater today. We shall take a trip around the river starting with Maldon and then work our way round the estuary until we approach Maldon again. Pictorial and map sources will be used wherever possible.
