A History of the Blackwater Estuary

A 10 week course on successive Mondays from 9th October 2023
at Mersea Museum 7pm to 9.30pm
by John Pullen-Appleby

This course offers an historical survey of the communities surrounding the river estuary. It will focus on the communities around the river and especially the islands (both extant and those that have ceased to be islands) that are a feature of the River Blackwater today. We shall take a trip around the river starting with Maldon and then work our way round the estuary until we approach Maldon again. Pictorial and map sources will be used wherever possible.

Each class will last for 2.5 hours. Each week will comprise of a 1 hour tutor led session, 30 minutes break and examination of artefacts and then another hour session.

The History of Mersea
From the Stone Age to the Space Age

A 10 week course on successive Mondays from 9th October 2023
at Mersea Museum 10am to 12.30pm
by John Pullen-Appleby

This is a re-run of the course on Monday evenings Autumn 2022, for the benefit of those that could not come to an evening course, or could not get in because the course was full.

The History of Mersea is intended as a general survey of the history of the island from the earliest of times to the present day. Each class will last for 2.5 hours. Each week will comprise of a 1 hour tutor led session, 30 minutes break and examination of artefacts and then another hour session. It hopes to throw light on the history of the island and will seek to illustrate how the great events going on elsewhere impacted on the island and the people that lived here.
Audience members are encouraged to bring along things they think may assist.
