1953 - The Big Flood Compared with much of the East Coast, Mersea Island escaped lightly in the big flood on the night of 31st January 1953.There was no loss of life, but houses were flooded, houseboats wrecked, beach huts destroyed.

1963 - The Big Freeze Creeks and river frozen, oyster stocks devastated.
50 years of the RNLI Lifeboat at Mersea The first lifeboat at West Mersea was inflatable inshore rescue boat, daylight and summer months only, no radio.The station became one of the busiest in England and there are plans to replace the present Atlantic 75 lifeboat with an Atlantic 85 in 2014.
