2/5th Bn., Essex Regiment
Died 1 July 1942 age 25
Commemorated Alamein Memorial, Egypt

The 1939 Electoral Roll shows Henry Setten Nesmyth and Joan Louisa Helles Nesmyth living at 2 Sadlers Cottages, The Lane, West Mersea. Henry was the son of Alice Louisa May née Setten and Henry Date Nesmyth, married in the Brentwood area in January 1916. Henry Satten Nesmyth was born in Billericay and married Joan in Ipswich in April 1937. They had a son in 1937 who died in infancy.

The 2/5th Bn. Essex Regiment was a Territorial Army Battalion from Colchester that became part of the 161st Infantry Brigade. January 1941 the Brigade was sent to Sierra Leone and then in June 1941 round the Cape to join the Middle East Command in North Africa. In July 1942 the Battalion was overwhelmed at Deir-El-Shein by Rommel's Africa Korps. Their resistance helped gain time for the withdrawing Eight Army to reorganize and stand on the Alamein Line.
